I’ve been contemplating a blog move and upgrade for, oh, a year now. The choice of a host has been the #1 roadblock to getting started. Thanks for the endorsement of Liquidweb; I’m looking into them (via your affiliate link, to be sure). I’ll feel better making a choice based on an endorsement rather than just choosing blindly.

See, that’s the thing–when they say, “Where are your files?” I’d be like, “Umm, on the server, I think.” My skill level is extremely low. So I’m mostly putting it off for that reason.

But when I do it, I’ll totally use your affiliate link, because I’m lazy like that (and also because, holy crap, it IS loading a zillion times faster than before…and because constant interaction is totally the level of service I need, so as to avoid having to acquire any actual skills myself. My relationship with my blog is kind of like the video where Pat Benatar is dancing with the pimp in the bar with only one hand on his shoulder and the other hand just dangling, looking all detached and stuff. That’s me. I’m dancing with the pimp one-handed, because I’m detached. And lazy.)

And by the way, Liquidweb? They are awesome. Notice how my site is loading so quickly, etc.? And their support is the same--they get back to you very quickly and you just go back and forth with them until everything's fixed. It took me three full days to get everything (I think) mostly back to normal, but that's with constant interaction! Yes, that's an affiliate link. But I maintain that this is the truth.

The private server doesn’t improve things very much, sadly. I think it’s best to just switch companies. It’s not a fun process, though. They don’t even set up their servers like other people, so there’s always a learning curve when someone tries to help you–e.g. things like, “wait, where are all your files?” are often exclaimed. This is not super reassuring, as you might imagine.

I have Dreamhost too, and it’s not been a good experience. I’m planning to dump them when the contract is up in December (unless I piss someone off and they hack me). Lately they’ve been emailing me enticements to try and get me to sign up for their private servers…I have no idea what the right level of traffic is for needing that, but I doubt if I’m there, and if I was I wouldn’t sign up with them.
