A Portrait of The Photographer As A Toddler

We gave Mini a special toddler tough camera for Christmas. Much hilarity ensued.

Hilarity, and many, many pictures of feet and various kinds of flooring.

His own feet.

Daddy’s feet.

Mommy’s feet.

But Mini doesn’t seem to want to limit himself to just feet and flooring. No, he’s also an expert on Mommy pictures.

Mini feels that Mommy cannot be captured in just one, straight-on, in-focus shot.

Mini also finds pedestrian the modern reliance upon constructs like makeup and flattering lighting to ease the egos of subjects. In Mini’s studio, subjects are not even allowed to put in their contacts before they are photographed.

Nor does he demand that his subjects pay attention to him while he’s photographing them; instead, Mini favors a cinema verite approach to his high art photography.

He can identify art in the highest of the high and the lowest of the low, as is demonstrated by the following, “Mommy Cleaning Out The Diaper Pail,” 2010.

But far more intriguing are his set of admittedly dark self-portraits.

Keep clicking, little shutterbug.

I think Mini got the perfect gift this year. The “mommy; side body and hand” is fantastic.

Michele, that is my favorite one as well. I wish it was a little more in focus, but the framing is great!

He certainly has a point of view.

Very cute, and Mommy as his muse? Very sweet.

anna January 6, 2010 at 1:42 pm

I don’t know if I’m his muse so much as I’m the one who is always lurking right near him. :)

Adorable (although I hate you a little for being able to walk around all sandal-y right now).

I let my oldest try out my my Flip around Christmas time. The “movie” she made is hysterical, but I can’t post it on Facebook with the others because there’s a lingering wide shot of my ass that is horrifying. No one looks good from height of a 4-year-old.

We let Mini use the Flip once when he was tiny, like just over a year, I think? HILARIOUS. We were referring to it as “critter cam.”

Mini is pretty much awesome. So are his photos.

anna January 6, 2010 at 1:44 pm

Ginger, he’s very into taking photographs. I hope he continues to pursue it, he has so much time to build it into a real skill!

I have a whole folder of my daughter’s photos of feet, the ground, the cats’ feet, tires on cars … and my ass. Oh, yes, nothing quite like seeing your big old ass across a 17″ monitor. The rest of her photos are self portraits too. Extreme closeups.

She’s 8 now and taller, so most of her photos now are of boobs and stomachs. Great.

Lynn, LOL. Yes, their perspectives are always interesting, but not always flattering.

love his point of view. very serious and brooding. perhaps this is what we should have gotten our two year old for christmas instead of that talking kai lan doll that will not. shut. up.

We also received a bunch of toys that make too much noise. The camera is refreshing in that it’s a relatively quiet activity, which is unusual for toddler toys.

Love the self-portraits; he appears to have a real talent there.
And he’ got the cutest little toes!

anna January 6, 2010 at 1:46 pm

@maureen, yes his feet are hilarious!

I would hang on to “Mommy Cleaning Out The Diaper Pail,” 2010. It could be worth a lot money someday!

anna January 6, 2010 at 9:36 pm

Hah! I kinda doubt it. But very funny he was able to get that one fully framed, eh?

Crash Commanda January 7, 2010 at 2:46 pm

Adorable. As he gets a little older you’ll get better framing, and lots of pictures looking up people’s noses and capturing everyone’s double chin.

anna January 7, 2010 at 9:33 pm

I cannot wait!
