3 Years Ago Today

Dear Mini:

Three years ago this morning, I was getting ready to marry your Daddy. Our wedding was on Long Island in June, and in the days leading up to the wedding, it was very very humid. Everyone kept saying, “It’s supposed to rain on Saturday! It’s supposed to rain on Saturday!” But I kept thinking if I wished hard enough, the sun would have to come out.

Oh sure, in pictures the weather looks perfect.

Oh sure, in pictures the weather looks perfect.

But sure enough, on the day of the wedding, it was raining. And so I was a little bit sad, mixed in with all the happiness. But only because I had spent a year planning our wedding so that it would be just perfect. And the weather was not cooperating.

Also, the woman who did my hair was kind of mean.

I asked for hair like Debi Mazar in Good Fellas. This is as close as my hair gets to that.

I asked for hair like Debi Mazar in Good Fellas. This is as close as my hair gets to that.

She decided that my hair should be done at 10:00 am, even though the wedding wasn’t until 3:00. So we ended up sitting around most of the day, trying not to mess up our hair.

And really, my hair looked a lot better before, as you can see here. I wanted hair like Debi Mazar in Good Fellas. I figured this would be easy to achieve on the North Shore of Long Island, and I was right.

My hair looked better before the ceremony.

My hair looked better before the ceremony.

Not everything was perfect that day, Mini. It rained. And my oldest friend, R, could not come because her mom was very sick. And we had to have everything inside, even though it would have been more beautiful outside.

But there were still some very beautiful things.

The tulips bloomed.

The tulips bloomed.

Like the tulips that decided to open at just at the right time.

And when Daddy got a little bit emotional during the ceremony.

Not really fond of all eyes being on me, as it turns out.

Not really fond of all eyes being on me, as it turns out.

And I got embarrassed.

And the cake! Oh the cake!

I still love that damn cake.

I still love that damn cake.

All of your aunts and uncles were there. They danced, and made cultural observations.

Mr. Right-Click danced with his sister, and my brother stood around and made cultural observations.

Mr. Right-Click danced with his sister, and my brother stood around and made cultural observations.

We even danced, your Daddy and I, even though we don’t usually do that. It was that kind of day.

We danced into the proverbial fire.

We danced into the proverbial fire.

And if there had been a sunset, well–we would have walked off into it.

If there had been a sunset, well, then, we would have walked off into it.

If there had been a sunset, well, then, we would have walked off into it.

Because even if it didn’t go exactly as I had planned it, it was still the most perfect of days. And just a little while later, you started growing in my tummy, and all of a sudden we got so busy that we never even made a book of all our pictures! And soon enough, we had two books full of pictures of you, but none of the day that made you possible.

And now we are a family. And I wish you could have been there to see it with us.

PS: I love you, Mr. Right-Click! Happy Anniversary.

Congratulations on three years! Enjoy celebrating each other today – the most important holiday/occasion to celebrate… so says my grandmother. Happy Anniversary.

Mr. Right-Click June 24, 2009 at 6:20 am

Thank you sweetheart. That was a grand and fun day. Happy anniversary. I love you.

Dammit, post some sort of Kleenex Alert before you do stuff like that, so I can be prepared.

I need to know what lipstick you were wearing at the ceremony, because it’s fabulous.

I might go buy a Bump-It now because of you, too, because I like the hair. Because a Bump-It with Crocs is a fabulous look (although the lipstick would help).

Happy anniversary to both of you.

I had Debi Mazar hair at my wedding, too! But my lipstick didn’t look nearly as good as yours. My husband was overcome by the moment, too. We had snow, though; no rain. You both look beautiful. Congratulations.

Happy Anniversary! It was, indeed, a glorious day.

(But did you have to post a picture with my butt in it?)

abdpbt June 24, 2009 at 7:13 am

LOL Sorry, Weezy. The photographers were all shooting from your butt’s POV, apparently.

anna June 24, 2009 at 7:16 am

By the way, the photographers we hired were not very good, as it turns out. But fortunately, Mr. Right-Click has a bunch of friends who are AP photographers, and our best ones were taken by a guest at the wedding (who happens to have a Pullitzer for photography!)

The lipstick is Pigalle by NARS. I love it. It’s just a little bit more exaggerated/defined version of my natural lip color.

Happy Anniversary to you, Mr. Right-Click and Mini!

Danielle June 24, 2009 at 7:30 am

Ridiculously cute. And happy anniversary!!!

Kerry June 24, 2009 at 7:34 am

I’m off to buy that lipstick, like, immediately. I have the same coloring as you, and I need a pink lipstick.

We got married up north, and we had an up-north photographer who did every standard shot you can think of, including the one of the bride looking backward at the camera, which is the cheesiest shot in the history of photography (especially when you don’t have a train…I had a very plain dress with no train). We bought very few pictures.

rain on your wedding day is supposed to be good luck, I’m pretty sure…
happy anniversary!
and OHMYGOD that cake.

anna June 24, 2009 at 7:36 am

Kerry, another one by NARS that is good for casual or daywear is called Dolce Vita. It’s a lot like Pigalle but it’s sheer.

Kerry June 24, 2009 at 7:54 am

Cool–I got that one too. Then I was a couple dollars short of free shipping, so I got that NARS Orgasm blush that you always read about in magazines. It’s apparently frosted (or whatever the current term is for “frosted”) so I’m skeptical, but we’ll see.

I’m supposed to be working, and I’m ordering makeup and hijacking your anniversary post. I suck.

abdpbt June 24, 2009 at 7:58 am

I use the Orgasm blush. I like it.

abdpbt June 24, 2009 at 7:58 am

Don’t get the matching Orgasm lip gloss, though. It sucks. It’s too 80s.

Ginger June 24, 2009 at 9:11 am

Happy Anniversary!! Rain or no, it looked beautiful!

foradifferentkindofgirl (fadkog) June 24, 2009 at 9:46 am

This – and the both of you, too – is probably the most beautiful thing I’ve come across in awhile. Happy, happy anniversary!

Jennifer (Conversion Diary) June 24, 2009 at 10:15 am

Happy anniversary!

Mini's Grandma June 24, 2009 at 11:50 am

Congratulations on your anniversary! It was a beautiful wedding in all ways-in spite of the rain. I especially liked the 2 readings done by your attendants. Have a happy day!

Chibi Jeebs June 24, 2009 at 2:45 pm

Happy anniversary! And thank you for sharing the pictures: they’re gorgeous! (The rain made the whole affair seem more romantic to me. <3 )

Juliet Grossman June 24, 2009 at 6:28 pm

Happy anniversary! I love your cake! I seriously want a big slice of that beautiful cake right now. What flavor was it?

This post reminded me of something that is going to happen to you with Mini. Your kids WILL ask you (repeatedly – not like over & over again, but they’ll ask then forget and ask six months later), “Where were WE?” when they look at your wedding pics. It blows their mind not only that the world existed before them, but that something SO major involving their parents could happen in their absence.

Heather June 24, 2009 at 7:01 pm

Awww that was a lovely post! Happy Anniversary! :D

Denise June 24, 2009 at 7:10 pm

Just lovely!

I have been meaning to tell you that I saw your hubby’s name in an article a while back and totally thought of you. Happy Anniversary!

lloyddabbler June 24, 2009 at 8:18 pm

Anna, you look like my sister so I like you even more :) . Congratulations on your anniversary and a lovely post to observe it. A bride with bad hair is a good omen, just like the rain. It’s to offer an opportunity to your new spouse to begin practicing a life of wonderfully generous lies… at least until you are together so long that when you look at each other you don’t see the face, the hair, the body… you see the soul. I know because I had a Mr. Scroll Wheel once, was married on a nice day in January with the best hair I’ve ever had. :) Now I know I need a Mr. Wireless Mouse, or even better, a Mr. WACOM Pen. Ohhh, dare to dream.

To Kerry, you must read InStyle too. NARS Orgasm has been in my shopping cart several times thanks to that, but never actually ordered… too pink for me. Good luck with it.

Becca June 24, 2009 at 8:23 pm

Awww! Y’all are so stinkin cute! I love the cake, it is gorgeous and it looked like a beautiful day after all.

Jennifer H. June 25, 2009 at 12:14 am

Happy anniversary, Anna! Loved your meeting story, and now I love your wedding story. Think your photos are fab and adore the details — the cards, the cake, your dress. Thanks for giving us a glimpse.

I’m a fan of the NARS Orgasm blush, too — very light and sheer (more peachy than pink, I think) and works on eyelids in a pinch, too. Totally agree on the lip gloss, however. Ick.

happy annivaersary! that cake was gorgeous, as were you and mr. right click.

Julie July 13, 2009 at 11:15 am
