8th Quadriweekley ABDPBT Sucky Sweepstakes! Win a $100 Visa Gift Card on Christmas Day!–TIME’S UP! WINNER TBA

by anna on December 25, 2008

[singlepic=76,320,240,,right] Merry Effing Christmas, Everyone! That’s right, it’s that time again! I’d like to announce the eighth installment in my series of transparent self-promoting sweepstakes giveaways! As part of the ABDPBT View definition in a new window Holiday Season Extravaganza of Stupid, I’ve been giving away a gift card every week of December, and here we are at the last week. It’s Christmas! So let’s do it up right and spread the stupid!

As is usually the case, there are two ways to enter:

  1. Find a candidate for “This Week in Stupid.” You may draw your example of stupid from news stories, popular culture, or your own life; the only requirement is that it demonstrates the wider cultural paradigm of stupidity that needs to be dissected so that it might be eliminated. Once you’ve located your candidate, post the story in the comments to this post.
  2. -or-

  3. The second option requires you to tweet the following:

RT @abdpbt View definition in a new window is giving away a $100 Visa Gift Card on her blog–enter at http://www.abdpbt View definition in a new window.com/?p=982

    And that’s it.

You can enter both ways: once each. As always, it is up to you to sell your stupid, and I promise to be completely arbitrary and unfair in my choice of winner for the gift card. The deadline is really soon. Like, really, really, soon. But prolly not before 8:30 am PST, just because I might not be up by then. But you know, soon. So post those stupids in the comment section of this post ASAP and/or get tweeting before I cut you off, or it’s NO $100 VISA GIFT CARD FOR YOU!!

Oh, and by the way, although they certainly deserve it, nobody gets to enter “Dreamhost” for their craptastic hosting service of ABDPBT View definition in a new window this week. I’ve got dibs on that one, mmkay?

Good luck!

Maybe not stupid, but here’s my candidate for asshole of the week: my brother-in-law. My husband told him we wanted to go to the Cotton Bowl if Ole Miss made it. Ole Miss made it. We are alumni, season ticket holders, and oh yeah, the hubs played football there. BIL (not an alum, nor is his wife, or their children planning on going there) lives in Dallas and offers to get us free tickets through his work, since he’s been offered them the past two years. He says he will ask for six, for us, him, his wife, 18 year old son and 12 year old son. Cool. We miss the deadline to order through Ole Miss with our Loyalty priority points. Finally he informs us on Saturday that he only got four tickets and is keeping them all for himself, even though they may not go to the game. His wife offered to not go because she has a shred of decency. We immediately go online to try to order some, only to find out the game was declared a sellout on Friday. We order tickets from a third party site and are supposed to get them the day before our 8 hour drive. Meanwhile, we are out $200 right before Christmas we did not plan on.

So I need money for the trip and my brother-in-law is a stupid, selfish asshole who is probably scalping 6 Cotton Bowl tickets online. They were really good seats, too. Ours (if we get them) are the worst in the stadium because it was all we could afford. What I win?

Stupid: After a day of family drama, I took a chunk out of my thumb opening a bottle of wine. And then I started crying. I truly had a terrible Christmas.

Well, I’m on Twitter now, but I don’t have enough followers to make re-tweeting a worthwhile endeavor (and I am not sure yet what a re-tweet looks like, and don’t want to look stupid). My Christmas was unusually stupidity-free. So, I offer you: the guy who thought it was smart to melt snow on his house with a blowtorch:

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (AP) — Fire officials in New Bedford, Mass., say a man using a blowtorch to melt ice on his back porch ended up setting his house on fire, causing up to $30,000 in damage.

Fire Capt. Scott Kruger tells The Standard-Times of New Bedford that no on was injured during Monday’s incident at the three-story home.

Kruger says the man was using a torch hooked up to a 20-pound propane cylinder. He got too close to the building’s wood frame and ignited the vinyl siding. The fire quickly spread into the building’s second- and third-floor apartments.

It took 25 firefighters to subdue the blaze that damaged bedrooms in the upstairs units, and caused damage to the structure and wiring.

The homeowner will not be charged.

I work with the public.
The sick public.
I listen and observe stupid for a living.

Last year, a 19 yo girl presented with bizarre, intense and persistent abdo cramps, that had forced more than one specialist into wasting God knows what amount of taxpayer’s money on MRI’s, CT scan, hospitalisation etc etc etc.

As a Naturopath, I have none of these whizz bang machines at my disposal, which is a good thing, because it meant that I had to go back to the very basics and ask what she actually ate….

Breakfast:

“I don’t eat breakfast.”

Morning Tea:

“I don’t eat morning tea”

Lunch:

“I don’t eat lunch.”

Uh huh, I see.

Dinner:

“Ice cream, Diet Pepsi and cigarettes.”

You may imagine the look on my face as I scratched my head and replied with,

“Have you ever considered that your pains may in fact be hunger pains?”

At great person expense, I left out a wide range of scathing, belittling remarks, none of which I’m proud of.

Now, let’s not for a moment think that this is a tale of this girls’ stupidity alone, because I’m looking at you, Dr. Stupid(s), your high tech machines and your inclination to miss the bleeding obvious.

So there.
