How To Pick Colors For Designs

Pictured above is a portion taken from the the Colors of The Social Web infographic done by ColourLovers. Whenever I design something I am trying to balance how I want it to look with how the intended audience would want it to look, and sometimes I do this more gracefully than others — this color chart is interesting to me because it gives you an idea of what colors can be associated with different professions or hobbies, at least from a statistical standpoint.

Does this mean you have to make a site for moms be predominately purple, or a site for fashionable moms pink and purple? No. But it’s interesting to see the give and take of the things — which comes first, the advertising or the cultural paradigm? Coke lovers use red in their profiles, and Pepsi lovers use blue. Angel investors use white. Environmentalists use green. How much of what we do is actually active choice and how much of it is dictated by what kind of a person we think we are or what we “aspire” to be?

I rather like that strippers and fashionistas seem to be the same color…

I see that according to this chart your blog colors fall into the fanatic-felon-dad category. Father complex?

By your chart I am a fanatical, hypnotic, felon, I’m sure some would agree. Now look deeply into my eyes and hand over the cupcakes.
