The Designer’s Complete Index By Jim Krause
I don’t have any kind of background in graphic design or art. But do I let this stop me from designing web sites? Hell, no. Lately, I’ve been using this set of books, The Designer’s Complete Index, to come up with different plans for how to redesign this website. What I like is that there are little sections that can help you make a choice of a color scheme based on the mood you want to convey, etc. And the Idea Index helps you with inspiration for things like typography, which you wouldn’t think needs inspiration, but trust me — it does. I have no idea if these are considered valuable resources by the real graphic design community, but I know that as a self-taught novice they are awesome. So take that, professional graphic designers.
