Hey Everybody, We Have the New York Times Crossword! Free!

My university newspaper published a syndicated version of the New York Times Crossword Puzzle each weekday. My friends and I would each work on the puzzle in the mornings, in between classes or at lunch, and would inevitably talk about it later, helping each other with the tougher clues. I could usually do Monday and Tuesday pretty well, but by Friday, I definitely needed the help.

My goal is to recreate that community here, so in case you have missed the large blinking sign to your right, let me direct your attention to the fact that we are now offering the puzzle as a regular feature of abdpbt.com. Please note that the syndicated version runs behind the regular print edition, though it is unclear exactly how long. If you have been completing the crossword in the original (non-syndicated) print version, you will be slightly ahead of us here.

This will be updated every day automatically, and I am still working on the code to enable comments on the puzzles, etc., so you may see some changes in format over the next few days. Enjoy and spread the word to all of your friends who love crosswords!

Format and software issues: I am working on getting these fixed for Safari. If you are using a Mac, your best bet is to use Firefox as your browser–scratch that, if you are using anything, your best bet is to be using Firefox. The crossword comes up if you have the latest version of Java installed on your computer . . . I will get back to you about what the problem is with Safari as soon as I figure it out myself.

Also, I am trying to work out other bugs with the NYT syndicate office, but since they are three hours ahead this almost always takes longer than expected. I just got halfway through the puzzle and my browser froze up. If you want to avoid this problem, you can print the puzzle using the printer icon on the top of the applet.

You are, like, WAY more advanced at this blogging/code stuff than I am. A Ph.D. *and* a blogging whiz?!?
    You’re pretty much my hero.

Hardly. I know just enough to mess things up, and then I have a squad of geeks I consult for the rest. They are kind of dropping the ball today, though. 🙂
